In german ubuntuusers forum there is an simpler solution without need to downgrade libfreetype.

Just add

FREETYPE_PROPERTIES="truetype:interpreter-version=35 cff:no-stem-
darkening=1 autofitter:warping=1"

in /etc/environment and restart x-server or reboot.
