Relevant log from ~/.xsession-errors when trying to open "test.xml" from
application launcher history section (replacing user name with
"myusername")

Opening item with URL "/home/myusername/.local/share/RecentDocuments/test.xml.desktop"
The desktop entry file  "/home/myusername/.local/share/RecentDocuments/test.xml.desktop"  has Type= "Link"  instead of "Application" or "Service"
Access to ' "/home/myusername/.local/share/RecentDocuments/test.xml.desktop" ' denied, not owned by root, executable flag not set. 

Failed to find service for  QUrl(
"file:///home/myusername/.local/share/RecentDocuments/test.xml.desktop"
)
