I started to work on tackling this problem. KWin part is prepared:

At the moment I'm targeting the KWin 5 only. Depending on when we get
the support into KSnapshot I will be tempted to backport to 4.11. It's
not largely invasive and only conflicts in atoms.(h|cpp) (I expect).
