This still happens in 14.04 beta2 on a virtualbox (4.3.10) install,
using a dynamically allocated VDI format virtual disk (size of disk
doesn't appear to matter).

Before installing (just using the live image), sudo parted -l shows
details for /dev/sr0, but for the drive I'm planning to install to, its
just "Error: /dev/sda: unrecognized disk label".

After install, I see:
Model: ATA VBOX HARDDISK (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 19.3GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
 1 1049kB 17.2GB 17.2GB primary ext4 boot
 2 17.2GB 19.3GB 2145MB extended
 5 17.2GB 19.3GB 2145MB logical linux-swap(v1)
