Well, with the Browse tool selected inverse search works perfectly for
me.

There a chance that this problem has to do something with this bug

That bug prevents you from using key combinations containing only modifier keys for performing certain actions (e.g. using alt+shift for switching keyboard layouts). An unofficial patch aimed at resolving the problem has been issued. To install the patch, use 

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:attente/1218322
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I wonder if it would fix the problem for you.
