and corrupted dpkg database.

Hi,
I upgraded to kubuntu 13.04 and discovered that emacs won't open a window.
I installed gnome and it works fine there. Rebuilt emacs from gnu source and
it has the same problem.
Is this a known problem?
Any possible setting issue
Other tools seem to work OK (only tried a handful like xterm, xxdiff,
'make gconfig')
