Unit test

I implemented a unit test based on Ben's steps. The test fails (as
expected). When changing the "if (true)" to "if (false)" and thus
preventing that the directory is left and later returned to, it passes.

@David: do you have any ideas how to proceed? Or is the unit test
sufficient for you to track down the bug?
