Thanks for the info.
This problem occured immediately after restart following upgrade to 12.04.
The bug made it impossible to install, update or remove packages. I have wiped the disk and started with a fresh install of 12.04.
I don't use any of the features of plymouth any more so have no problem not having it installed.
IMO, this is an issue with the upgrade script.
