I just installed network-manager-openvpn 0.9.0-0ubuntu1 without (automatically) installing network-manager-openvpn-gnome.
After that I could create a OpenVPN connection and actually use it without problems.
So could you try to install/upgrade to network-manager-openvpn (version
0.9.0-0ubuntu1) and see whether the problem is solved?
