same thing on *Kubuntu Oneiric*

helped:
  sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid name_of_the_hidden_essid

and after some seconds it recognized my hidden network.

$ lsb_release -a
Description: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10
Codename: oneiric

$ uname -a
Linux ###### 3.0.0-13-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 2 13:25:36 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
