I just found the following thread and tried its advice:

Setting the option to "Show system tray icon" in 'Settings > Configure >
Behavior > System Tray' solves this issue for me.  I can now close all
Kopete windows and then reopen them from the message indicator, even if
new unread messages have been received while the windows were closed.
