Kate is working under gnome. I set up it from standart ubuntu repository.
Version of Ubuntu: 10.04 LTS

Version of kate: 
Kate
Version 3.4.2
Using KDE Development Platform 4.4.2 (KDE 4.4.2)

P.S. On other pc with gentoo, with kate 3.4.5 bug is still repeatable
