Just an update, I have managed to get it to work but I am unsure which
of the 2 changes I made, well, made the difference.

On my eeePC netbook I currently have 2 separate installs, 1 for Kubuntu
Netbook Edition 10.04 and another for Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 (both
final versions). With Ubuntu I noticed that there was an issue where you
had to edit the following file (administrative access via sudo is
required to edit it): /etc/default/grub and making sure that the line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX contains "acpi_osi=Linux" in between the quotes
listed for this command in the grub file. Once you have saved the file
you need to run the command "sudo update-grub" and reboot your OS to
ensure the changes have gone through. This change allowed me to simply
press Fn + F2 and enable my wireless as well as being able to use the
other function keys available. This is one of the changes I made within
Kubuntu and I believe is what made things work.

The second thing I did was connect my netbook via a dedicated Ethernet
cable and installed an application called eee-control
(www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install-eee-control-in-
ubuntu-9-10-karmic.html) to control certain features such as power
management. I have a feeling this was an extraneous step as I was able
to use my wireless network card and function keys without additional
software installed when I changed the grub file under my Ubuntu
partition/install.

With both these options performed I simply pressed the correct
combination of function keys (and was notified if I had turned wifi on
or off) and then right clicked on the network connections menu and
ensured that the Enable wireless option was checked and if not to check
it off and then proceed to add a wireless network connection via the
Network Manager.
