Since reporting this I have updated to 2.6.32.22 kernel - the problem persists
I have tried installing the backported alsa modues which added 2 extra mic channels (none worked) and the external speakers stopped working altogether.
I have also tried editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf adding options snd-hda-intel model=
with laptop, laptop-hp or hp none of which have made a difference
