it appears that i'm not using ppa:kernel-ppa/mainline correctly, but my
use is correct enough that i have linux-2.6.34-020634-generic from the
PPA.  i'm not sure if this problem is triggering this bug.

despite this error, KPackageKit (or perhaps packagekit--i'm not sure)
has been successfully auto-updating during this time, and i've used it
to upgrade various packages after they are auto-updated (for example, i
upgraded to KDE 4.4.5 today).
