I installed Ubuntu 9.10 from cd and the same usb port worked with the
same usb stick and mediaplayer.

I also noticed that my dvd burner was not found, I downloaded the Ubuntu image on this machine and could not burn it with 
k3b since the drive was not available. I haven't been using kde 4, but I used kde 3,5 and this drive was recognized and usable without any additional setup steps.

Motherboard is Msi P35 Neo F, usb controller is Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family)
(data checked with sysinfo on Ubuntu 9.10)

dvd is LG DVDram GSA-4160B, ide device
Ide interface is: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE6121 SATA II Controller (rev b1) (prog-if 8f [Master SecP SecO Prip PriO])
