Could you please check if this problem also occurs with the live cd?

This sounds like your shortcut manipulates another sound channel than
what is configured in kmix as master (right click on the kmix tray icon
and select master).

If I recall correctly the shortcut and kmix' master channel should now
(Kubuntu 9.10+) be the very same channel, which means that the tray icon
should properly update. This of course does not apply if another app is
overriding the shortcut, hence I would be interested if it works in a
live session, where no additional apps should be interfering with the
shortcuts.
