The bit of being unable to update software has been SOLVED using this page:

The solution involved backing up the directory  /var/lib/apt/lists/ then deleting everything inside it (except for the backup, obviously) and then running apt-get again.
The reamining trouble are: the one with passwrds not been properly typed in within dialog boxes.
