Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

Using lucid beta 1

when trying to install some packages kpackagekit fails silently - ie
fails to install the selected package(s) and give no indication that the
installation has failed.

eg running kpackagekit from the command-line and trying to install
xubuntu-desktop (but this happens with other packages as well).
