>From where I stand, the icon for knetworkmanager looks like a whiteish blob. it's not that I have a poor vision, the digital clock stands right next to it and I can perfectly read the time, and even the date that is in a really small font. I can also clearly see what the other systray icons are. 
If I put my nose 15cm of my monitor, I can figure out a bit more about the icon: it seems to be comprised of a kind of antenna with a number (1? 2?) of rings that maybe indicate the strength of the signal (?), the number "100" overlaid on it in a corner, and a 5-pixel wide green tick. There are two problems here: (1) the antenna, rings and number are white, and the background of the systray is light gray, so the contrast is terrible (using the default settings, I didn't change any color). (2) There is too much information packed in a small space (antenna, number, green tick). Besides I don't know what the number is supposed to mean, as my signal quality, according to iwconfig, is 94 and not 100. This ought to be compared with the gnome nm-applet, that displays a clear, high-contrast, low-detail "bar graph" of the connection strength, when the connection is active, and an icon that clearly indicates that there is no connection otherwise.
