Oh, for some reason I thought you said that pptp worked fine, but your first vpn you tried to configure was failing. My mistake. :)
Could you attach a copy of /var/log/syslog after you have tried to connect with KNetworkManager, followed by trying to make the connection with nm-applet from the network-manager-gnome package please? Thanks in advance.
