i have same issue on karmic.....

top shows these . . .

67% of CPU, with nothing running  . . . .

I have no *exotic* plasmoid-widget-applets.

Same thing, changing desktop settings, playing around with the system
tray notification popup settings etc, brings it down to reasonable
levels.... (until it triggers again . . . . for reasons unknown)
