I have also had this experience, and a few others that I think are related to the openoffice.org-kde package. With the KDE integration installed in the karmic beta, I cannot add images to Impress slideshows using the menu item. A dialog comes up and I can select an image, but the dialog blinks (disappears and comes back) and does not add an image.
I also cannot set a background image because of the same problem. Impress is unable to "Save image as" and cannot export a slide to an image file. Once I removed the KDE integration package, all these problems went away.
When saving as M$ ppt, I have to manually add the extension, but not when saving as odp.
