I have the same problem on karmic with KMail 4.3.1. I cannot use KMail with my IMAP account.
I have posted a bug-report on the KDE site:

Maybe that's a better place to get a quick reaction, since I am pretty
confident the problem is not entirely ubuntu-specific.
