/usr/share/icons/default/index.theme is just a symbolic link.

instead of modifying the oxygen file directly, run the following
command:

sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme

i'm not sure which one is the default for gnome ubuntu, maybe someone
with a clean gnome ubuntu install can help out here.

i'm also an unsuspecting  victim of the horrid kubuntu-desktop
