I don't know if this is a correct post or not. If not, someone bark.
I have had this on a Toshiba A205-S4777 with Intel GM965 chip set..
9.10 does not flicker and go black when run from VBox.
It does when run from LiveCD.
SUSE open 11.1 has the same problem.
I had a problem very much like this in Vista when the brightness was at maximum. It went away with the brightness at mid-range.
Maybe the problem is also hardware/driver related if the power manager leaves the brightness at max during boot.
