This is the hardware mute switch. I have seen the issue posted to
numerous blog sites about various HP notebook models. The software
keeps the turning mute on until sound is played, then unmuted while
sound is playing, then mutes once sound is done.

Bug description:
In Kubuntu 9.10 when no application is playing sound, the mute switch on HP dv9700 notebook PC shows muted/off, but when an application plays sound then it shows unmuted/on. This was not a problem in Kubuntu 9.04.
