The widget is called network manager because the underlying component is called network manager. While I see how the name could make you believe that it was a generic network manager, it is really not. And it only gets removed because networkmanager and wicd are conflicting with each other, so if the former gets removed because you install the latter the plasmoid will be removed as well (due to broken dependency chain).

However, I think it probably would make sense to make the widget
independent from networkmanager, no clue if that is possible, but
technically that is what solid is for, so the widget should only be
talking to solid and solid should worry about the backend. Anyway, it
currently does only work with networkmanager, so changing the deps
wouldn't make it work anyway :)

Sorry, that we can't do anything here, though you might want to get in
touch with the KDE developers working on the widget and push them
towards making it networkmanager-independent.
