Today i decided to add jaunty-proposed repositories to see if there was
some new kernel available, among other packages.

Now i've got kernel 2.6.28-12-generic running and kde 4.2.3, and the
problem still persists.

jtholmes: is 2.6.28-12 the kernel you said might fix this problem?
