I'm closing this as "Fix released", since it's fixed for me now: everything gets displayed properly with desktop effects disabled, too.
Apparently the recent rebuilds against current libplasma-dev have fixed this?

Please re-open in case you are still having the problem in a up-to-date
Jaunty install and provide more information then.
