Yes, I agree this could be a big pain, but I can offer a suggestion: try
webmin download it from http://www.webmin.com/ the deb package, then
install it you will also find that on their website they have a plugin
sort-of thing for samba that makes creating user accounts, passwords and
modifying things much easier.

This is where you find the plugin: http://www.webmin.com/standard.html

Then just download and install it
