This behavior is still present in Release 4.3.0 of KDE.

Kickoff ignores the font selected using SystemSettings | Appearance |
Fonts.

Kickoff also ignores, as Michael pointed out, the fact that anti-aliased
fonts are enabled and the sub-pixel rendering is selected.

In my case, I have selected Liberation fonts with anti-aliasing enabled
and sub-pixel rendering, but the default DejaVu Sans font without anti-
aliasing/sub-pixel rendering is used in Kickoff.

This is the same behavior I reported in a bug related to the Lancelot plasmoid:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdeplasma-addons/+bug/368660

(A screen shot of the KDE 4.3.0 release Kickoff depicting this behavior
is attached).
