Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: kpackagekit
Running KDE 4.2.2 on Kubuntu 9.04
I started KDE and "Software Updates" displayed a message about software
updates. I confirmed installing them, and a Package Install progress
Meanwhile I wanted to install Amarok 2.1beta, so I went into KPackageKit
Settings > Edit Software Sources > Third-Party Software and added "deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu jaunty main". This
popped up a software-properties-kde window alerting "The information
about available software is out-of-date", so I clicked its [Reload]
button. That window went away but thereafter various windows got stuck
and went blank. As I tried various things additional alerts appeared.
Here's my best recollection of the sequence of events:
* Software Sources went blank
* The Package Install progress dialog got stuck at "Downloading additional package files... File 47 of 48" 99%
* Software Updates is stuck at Check and Install Updates with a "Refreshing package cache" alert.
In the latter I clicked [Cancel] and maybe clicked [Refresh] in "Software Updates". I immediately got a "Cannot get lock" warning alert:
Cannot get the exclusive lock on the packaging backend.
Please close any other legacy packaging tools that may be open.
Details: Only use one package management programme at the the same time.
This alert displayed truncated, I had to resize it (I filed bug 368904).
When I clicked on Package Kit in the task bar, another warning alert appeared:
Window with title "Software Sources" is not responding. This window belongs to application software-properties-kde ...
Expected behavior: Don't let users mess up software updater/package install by doing two things at once.
After I clicked OK in "Cannot get lock" and clicked "Keep running" in "Not responding", Software Sources remained blank and Package Install remained at 47 of 48. If I click the close box in "Software Sources" I get another warning it's not responding.
I closed Software Updates and the other two windows remained as before.

I clicked the close box in "Package Install" and it and the "Software
Sources" windows went away and now my system is OK. So close enough
windows in the right order and the lockup goes away.
