I don't know why it is marked invalid, I've found this issue too with
kile but not with kate.

I fixed it by turning sub-pixel font rendering off in kde systemsetting.
(alt-f2 > systemsettings > appearance > fonts click "configure..." next
to anti aliasing, turn sub pixel off. you may need to install
systemsettings from the repos)

it seems to be related to the new graphics driver for intel which I'm
using
