I believe that's KWin. I'm using Gnome. Using the Compiz tray icon I
switched the window manager from Metacity to KWin, the screen fade to
black immediately. And I was using KWin with its effects, like the
ALT+TAB and window preview. May I help with some debug info?

Any guess about why Kwin stop to work properly?
