The ntfs mount option points to the default/best mount option for NTFS;
eg. in hardy it is actually ntfs-3g.

$ which mount.ntfs | xargs ls -l
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 2008-07-14 12:18 /sbin/mount.ntfs -> /bin/ntfs-3g

So using ntfs should make sure that you always use the default/best NTFS
