Same problem here on standard Kubuntu 8.04 x86_64 install:

$ uname -a
Linux inside 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 21:01:46 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:        8.04
Codename:       hardy

FWIW, with the Brother HL5250DN driver in the standard install, I can
print duplex, but as with above, all areas to select landscape are
grayed out. I then installed xpdf and now understand why it is called
unacceptable! I can landscape but cannot duplex, as there are no
printing options.

gpdf is not available:
$ sudo apt-get install gpdf
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package gpdf is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package gpdf has no installation candidate
