I experience the same behaviour as above. Inrepid 8.10 final, Dell
Inspiron 1520, using NVIDIA 177.80 on a 8600M GT. There are 7 levels of
brightness supported by the hardware:

root at fackamato-laptop:/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0# ls
actual_brightness brightness power uevent
bl_power max_brightness subsystem
root at fackamato-laptop:/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0# echo 1 > brightness
root at fackamato-laptop:/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0# echo 2 > brightness
root at fackamato-laptop:/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0# echo 3 > brightness
root at fackamato-laptop:/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0# echo 4 > brightness
root at fackamato-laptop:/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0# echo 5 > brightness
root at fackamato-laptop:/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0# echo 6 > brightness
root at fackamato-laptop:/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0# echo 7 > brightness
root at fackamato-laptop:/sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0# echo 8 > brightness
bash: echo: write error: Invalid argument

There is also a acpi_video1 directory, with same files. They also change
the brightness of the LCD monitor.
