Just to be sure, this is listed under Ubuntu, you did an Ubuntu install
(on vbox) and then overloaded with KDE (via a dummy package?) or did you
in fact install Kubuntu initially?

Would you mind installing gdm (and switching to it in the config dialog)
then apt-get-purging kdm. Reboot to check gdm runs OK then reinstall kdm
to make sure the config dialog is displayed. Finally reboot to check KDM
is properly operative again. That would clear this up for me and show
it's just me that KDM doesn't like rather than a bug.
