I have the same/similar problems when printing from inkscape or
acroread. As acroread uses lpr I doubt it has something to do with
kdegraphics/kprinter. So the problem must be in cups or in the driver.

ii  foomatic-db-gutenprint  5.2.0~rc1-0ubuntu1      OpenPrinting printer support - database for Gutenprint printer

I'm using gutenprint 5.2 with my Epson Stylus RX520 (compatible to
RX510).
