Small typo in my previous post. The correct syntax for
AllowMouseOpenFail (as in xorg.conf) should be:

Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "true"

with that displayconfig works fine. Without the "true" specified
explicitly, the X server will work, but displayconfig crashes
