Problem solved?
I just installed Ubuntu 8.10, and had same kind of problems as others with static IP address.
I inserted twice data for dsl -settings, so I have two rows identical data as figured next:

IP address      Subnet mask      Gateway
10.0.0.5         255.255.255.0     10.0.0.2
10.0.0.5         255.255.255.0     10.0.0.2

Suprisingly, internet access worked !
