Reproduced with compiz enabled /disabled, installed/uninstalled...
Editing authatieventsd.sh not working for me.

My systems, Kubuntu 8.04:
Desktop
GeForce 6800, nvidia 169.12

Laptop
ATI radeo Xpress 1100, ati 8.47.3
