Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kcontrol

On Kubuntu 8.04, kcontrol 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu7.

When connecting an external display or video projector that does not
support the current resolution of the laptop internal display, the
external display will work after an X restart, and will not show the
full screen. Changing the resolution using krandrtray changes the
internal display's resolution, but turns off the external display.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect external display
2. Ctr-Alt-Backspace to restart X11
3. External display shows only part of the desktop.
4. Log in
5. Change resolution using krandrtray.
6. Both screens turn off as X11 changes resolutions, only internal screen will come back.

Expected behaviour (this worked for me on 7.10):
1. through 5. are fine
6. Both screens turn off as X11 changes resolutions, both come back up with new resolution.

Workaround:
Using xrandr from a terminal to turn on the external display works.

** Affects: kdebase (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
