thank you for your quick answer. I'm sorry i neglected to mention that I
am running hardy with kde 3.5.9, not 4.0.2 ; dolphin-kde4 lists all
devices neatly and offers an option to unmount them, on the (kde3)
desktop though there is no such option (not even in konqueror).
