3) I expected the sound to work. 
4) 473 /usr/bin/artsd  (fore the reboot 1457) processes running, cannot kill them.

After I uninstalled pulseaudio (not working, anyway), I noted 1457 artsd processes running, could not kill them.
I did reboot the machine, loged into KDE, became the knotify error message: "During the previous startup, KNotify crashed while instantiating KNotify. Do you want to try again or disable aRts sound output?"(sic)
and since then the number  of artsd processes are raising up to 473 ( now as I'm writing, they are 530! ).

All in all I'm pretty disappoited by Hardy! 
I 'grow and rise' using GNU/Linux, I was really happy from Conectiva 3.1, over Potato up to Feisty. I work with it, productive, since I can think! 

I will downgrade to Feity now, I need a stable OS and 'Software
Framework' and I'm not seeing Hardy as LTS-fit by now.
