First of all thnks for such speedy reply ;).....Ya i know that it not a problem in amarok.but while filling the bug report i was asked to be specific ...so chose it.
->To be honest i can't play in any player that i have downloaded..say xine,movie player,juk,rhythmbox....though i can hear a faint buzzing sound in amarok when vol is maximum....and regarding video files...the video stream is cluttered,though problem was there even before i plugged the heaphones....

->And about your question of whether did i plug in the wrong
socket....no i didn't.....i say this because i can play music and video
files on WIN XP which i dont like to,but have to now ..I love Ubuntu!!!
