There are two parts to this problems:
(1) Driver/HAL problems
(2) Problems with the software handling it (kde-guidance/gnome equivalent).

Depending on your hardware, you could be affected by either (1) or (2)
or both. (2) affects kde in hardy (fix is in hardy-proposed); but I
don't know (and don't suppose) that gnome is also affected. So your
problems is most likely regarding (1).
