Hi Alex

1. Is indeed a bug, so I have filed this under konqueror. It may well already have been reported, in which case someone may mark this as a duplicate. If you are prepared to push ahead and install Kubuntu anyway, you may want to install firefox for access to GMail--that's what I do.
2. If you want to install Kubuntu, can you see whether this still happens on an installed system?
3. I suspect this is just a bit confusing--it can't physically eject an external hard drive, as it can with a CD. If it's been unmounted, you should be able to safely unplug it.
