The first part of this bug is fixed in KDE 4 in Intrepid.

The second part behaves a little differently now.  Changing the layout
variant doesn't change the label at all.  However, I'm not sure if
that's a bug because I think it just assumes you could have a custom
label and it shouldn't change it.
